The Benefit of Protestantism

I emphasize and will always emphasize the importance of catholicity. Furthermore, I will also speak against those versions of Protestantism which have moved so far from their traditional heritage that they bear no marks of the true Church. The word is not faithfully preached, and the sacraments are not acknowledged at all.

However, despite my fierce opposition to this kind of Protestantism - if it can be called that - there are some reasons that as an Anglo-Catholic I would still be comfortable with the Protestant label.

1. As I’ve mentioned before, Protestants have a unique ability to grow and reform which I believe is an important part of the sanctification of the Church. Anything else is an overrealized eschatology.

2. This is really the aspect I want to focus on today, and that is the fact that Protestantism - when done well - refuses to develop allergies towards various traditions wholesale. As an Anglican, I can draw from the riches of Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, and Reformed thought without feeling as though it is an abandonment of my own tradition. Whereas Rome and the East often act allergic to one another, with the East at times (more than the west) denigrating western theology entirely, I can recognize all of these branches as containing truth and aspects of the faith once for all delivered. I am convinced that this is a uniquely Protestant reality that comes directly from our ecclesiology.

Some might push back and see me advocating “buffet theology,” as though you can pick and choose what you want on your plate with no real accountability or objectivity. Doesn’t this approach lead to a wholly subjective theological system? Quite the contrary. I would argue that we don’t have the option to pick and choose - we can only receive what Christ has handed down to us. The difference I am seeking to emphasize is simply that this reception does not exclude massive parts of that apostolic deposit. In the case of the East, for example, they claim to have the fullness of truth despite practically ignoring all of western theological development after the Great Schism. Can that truly be called Catholic? Can that truly be called Orthodox?

Protestant theology, when grounded in catholicity, is a reclaiming of the riches of Christ’s Church, rejecting the sectarian attitudes of the Roman and Eastern churches, and embracing the fullness of Christ’s Church as handed down through the ages. It is the recognition that Rome, the East, and other historic Protestant groups are one body and therefore our responsibility and heritage.

Welcome to the Mere Catholicity Locals Community!

Welcome to the Mere Catholicity Locals Community! Here, you will find like-minded Christians with a desire to live ecumenically and pursue Christ in all things.

The Mere Catholicity movement runs only through listener support. The work that I (Jonah) do requires time and money. Without the financial support of my Locals community, I would not be able to continue making content. Simple as that. It is only thanks to this group that I can continue providing you with content that (hopefully) both edifies and challenges!

The good news for you is that joining the community itself is completely FREE! Once you sign up, you will be able to see most posts, live streams, and even content posted by other users. However, you will only be able to observe. You will not be able to comment, post, or see any exclusive content. This might be a good way to see if you want to support later down the line. So please join! Even if you cannot afford to give at this time!

Now, for those who do wish to give ...

Substack versus Locals

Friends - as I consider the various platforms that I operate, I find Substack to the most conducive to the model of online ministry that I am aiming for. Though I still plan to post here, as many of you still support me through this platform, Substack is where I will be focusing the majority of my time. If some of you wish to move your subscription from here to Substack, you are welcome to do that. Those who continue to support here, I will continue to post here — mostly the stuff that is behind the paywall on Substack so that you are getting the exclusive content regardless of where you are subscribed.

Hope you all are doing well. Lord bless you.

Ordination to the Diaconate

I've been gone again for a time preparing for my ordination. I was ordained a Deacon in the Holy Catholic Church on March 8th, 2025.

It was a joy beyond words. I am now back in full swing with ministry, media, and work.

I hope you all have been doing well. More to come soon.

The Return of the Mere Catholicity Podcast

Good morning everyone. I wanted to quickly update you on the Mere Catholicity Podcast. I’ve been posting videos on my channel, but it has been quite sometime since my channel has had a podcast episode release.

With my new job as a classical teacher, scheduling interviews has been a challenge. However, my plan is to use my summer breaks as time to double down on planning and recording new podcasts. The idea will be to record a ton of interviews that will then slowly release throughout the school year, expiring around the time the following summer arrives. This will ultimately result in a consistent once a month interview.

All that to say, the podcast will resume here in May or June of 2025 with some excellent interviews lined up!

Blessings on your Sunday!
